Faith Basics
Being a follower of Jesus means embracing foundational disciplines like prayer, worship, and community. These practices help us grow in faith and share God’s love as we strive to be SALT and LIGHT in our world.
What does being a follower of Jesus mean?
A follower of Christ means actively living by Jesus's teachings, striving to be like Him in actions, character, and love, which involves surrendering personal will, obeying commands, serving others, and bearing witness to Him, going beyond mere belief to a life of transformation and commitment. It's a daily walk of faith, seeking holiness, and putting God first in all aspects of life, rather than just adhering to religious traditions or rules.
How do I talk with God (pray)?
Christians can talk with God (also known as prayer) in simple, honest, everyday ways. It doesn’t have to be formal or complicated. Prayer can be:
- Silent or spoken
- Long or short
- Formal (like the Lord’s Prayer)
- Personal conversation
A simple prayer can be as straightforward as:
“God, I need Your help today. Please guide me.”
Get the most out of reading the Bible
Christians read the Bible because it’s God’s Word. God has spoken.
And His word (the Bible) is trustworthy. It can help you know more about God and how we should live as followers of Jesus. It also helps us to grow spiritually and can help us find peace and comfort in hard times.
What is worship?
For a follower of Jesus, worship is much more than singing songs—it is the whole-life response to who God is and what He has done. In one sentence worship is offering your whole life to God in love, gratitude, and surrender because of who He is and what Jesus has done.
Here are the key parts:
1. Worship Is Loving God Above Everything: Worship is giving God first place in priorities, desires, time, and decisions
2. Worship Is Surrender: Romans 12:1 says, “Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice… this is your true and proper worship.”
3. Worship Is a Lifestyle: Worship is not just what happens on Sunday.
Anything done out of love for Jesus becomes worship.
4. Worship Is Intimacy With God: It’s relational, not ritual.
5. Worship Is Done in Spirit and Truth: Jesus said (John 4:24): True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. True worship combines heart and truth.
6. Worship Is What You Give Your Life To: Everyone worships something—money, success, approval, pleasure, self. A follower of Jesus chooses to worship God instead.
What does is mean to be baptized?
Baptism is a public, symbolic act, done in obedience, that declares you belong to Jesus, identifies you with His death and resurrection, and celebrates your new life in Him.
Is community important?
Community matters because God designed His people to grow, serve, and follow Jesus together, not alone. It is absolutely central for a follower of Jesus. The church isn’t meant to be a place you attend—it’s a family you belong to. It provides spiritual strength & helps as you grow in your faith.
